Even if all I am is an extra set of hands, I try to learn something and just be there to help. My LGS installed the barrel for free. Still, even at the low number, that’s a good amount of barrel life and, since it’s an AR, a barrel swap is extremely simple. The heaviest round — the Federal Premium 90gr soft point moving at over 2,600fps — matched the American Eagle round at 7/8″, but at roughly double the price per round. Most I’ve seen show 1/2 inch and sometimes tighter groups at 100 yards. I think for a lot of people, it’s all about desire. The tested model — the MSR 15 Recon — comes decked out in Blackhawk tactical furniture and Blackhawk flip-up sights, and boasts 5R rifling. By the time I got to the bench I had a good idea of how the MSR-15 Valkyrie would perform. Fix the trigger and you’d have a great gun. I’m beginning to think manufacturers in the AR platform market should have a “triggerless” option for $100 less than whatever crappy trigger they normally include. In schools the trades are frowned upon (apparently so are math, history, economics, science and most other useful bits of knowledge). $100 less? Savage MSR-15 Valkyrie’s collapsible Magpul UBR buttstock (image courtesy JWT for thetruthaboutguns.com). All fair points but I think the reason for the market being as it you are seeing it today is that the vast majority of people won’t/don’t build a rifle because they have no idea how, don’t know how to find out, and probably don’t want to be bothered. Savage has done this. We have a 24 hour cooling off period in Illinois on rifles. silencer. I had to wait about 10 days for it to come is, as they didn’t have any when I went to buy one; that was March 26th. Savage shipped the gun dirty, and considering how gummed-up it was, I have to assume it had sat unfired for quite some time. Barrel Length: 16.125 inches, 1:8 twist Their “AccuTrigger” is such a selling point that they bring a gigantic functioning model of it to every trade show they attend. I was actually surprised to find the ammo pretty easy to come by, both in my local gun stores and online. The higher the grain the better in a Wylde chambered AR, especially with the 5R rifling that Savage put into the barrel. Case in point: the Savage MSR or “Modern Savage Rifle” series: four models of semi-automatic firearms based on the AR-15 design. The real show-off is the cartridge’s ability to load 25 rounds of 90gr .224 diameter rounds and push them over 2,600fps. Savage provided 320 .224 Valkyrie rounds of ammunition for the review. Needless to say, this has a negative effect on accuracy. Brownells currently sells the rifle for much, much less. This gun is available for under $800 in multiple locations. From there he went to his gunsmith and had him mount one of his Nightforce scopes on it and bore sight it. So I slapped on the standard 3-9x scope I use for firearms testing and hit the range. I absolutely agree, if you are only going to have one, either buy a whole upper or a whole gun. It put five shots into a .57-inch group at 100 yards. This is one of the very few guns I wouldn’t bother reloading for. It makes the Savage MSR light yet provides more accuracy than a featherweight profile barrel. They’d rather pay more for something that works out of the box. Weight: (lb)/(kg) 7.88 / 3.57 If you are shooting an AR-15 in .5.56 NATO in an un-suppressed “direct impingement” rifle and sticking to the standard NATO offerings of that caliber, an adjustable gas block won’t do you a whole lot of good. How much do you want to bet that she called Code Enforcement thinking “I’ll show those stupid kids” just because she thought we were stupid for doing it? People constantly talk about how easy it is, that AR’s are Legos for adults but forget that we now live in a society where most people couldn’t change their own oil if their life depended on it. Aggressively priced, plenty of features (on paper), and consistently glowing reviews. At no point after did I lube, disassemble, or otherwise provide any maintenance to the rifle whatsoever. But I didn’t think I’d be impressed with another AR-15 platform rifle. That’s what you pay poor people to do…and that right there is the wrong attitude that is affecting a lot of the country. Now that the craze/fad is over, I bet I could’ve built it even cheaper. The $1,500 MSRP proves that good things come with a price. The downside is that many shooters, like me, use that texture and shape to muscle the gun into position, instead of getting proper body alignment in the first place. I can count on one hand the number of ARs I've tested that posted a group better than that, and all of them cost more than twice the Recon. Again, the fact that a company which prides itself on trigger perfection missed the mark so spectacularly on their new-to-the-market MSR has me thoroughly confused. Savage MSR-15 Valkyrie Hogue pistol grip (image courtesy JWT for thetruthaboutguns.com). Caliber: .223/5.56 (.223 Wylde chamber) (Photo: Scott Mayer) For testing, I fitted the Recon with a Bushnell Trophy Xtreme 4-16x44mm scope and fired Black Hills 60-grain V-Max, Federal 62-grain Fusion MSR and SIG 77-grain OTM loads at 100 yards. ... this wont be a problem… Personally I find it somewhat distressing but off the top of my head I can think of a dozen people I know that own an AR and would be puzzled if you handed them a ratchet and a socket for it, nevermind wanted them to put the socket on the ratchet and do something with it. The Savage isn’t a bad carbine but the trigger is an issue – like 90% of all AR’s in this price range. I would take the opinion of the old guy behind the counter at wal mart before I would take his 100 out of 100 times. Aside from finding the parts you want- ie: 223Wylde chamber on a 16″ 1:8 twist barrel- at the price your budget allows(admittedly a very low budget)the hardest part is being patient and diligent about looking for deals. Our MSR 15 Recon comes standard with upgrades serious shooters demand, including a nickel-boron coated trigger, free-float handguard and upgraded Savage barrel. Rate of Twist: 1 in 7″ Anyway you could be enticed to do one on the Rock Island Armory .380 “baby rock” 1911? Also, it shows some ignorance on your neighbor’s part. Otherwise it’s a damn fine AR straight out of the box, for under $1k. Savage went with a 1:8 twist rate rifling profile which is great for stabilizing a broad range of projectiles, from heavier 75gr slugs to lighter 55gr pills. And he’s exaggerating about the trigger. The free float handguard is small in diameter; large enough to clear the gas block, but small enough to get a full grip around the handguard. It’s much better than most stock AR triggers easily. Weight: 7 lbs A good shooter can adjust to almost any trigger. Admittedly, prices in the wild will likely be more competitive. In fact, the Magpul PMAG is only thing that isn’t made by a Vista family. His lack of knowledge of firearms and laws is scary. Most skilled tradesman earn as much or more than many college-educated folks. There’s more than a little difference in the gas requirements needed to make the rifle cycle between a 60 grain unsuppressed round and a suppressed 90 grainer. I could basically build this exact rifle with a better trigger for around $800, which leaves a lot of cash left over for ammo. Thoughts on Savage MSR 15? Required fields are marked *. The.223 Wylde chamber cut combines the best parts of .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO. The only special tools needed are for the upper, every thing else is pretty much tool free, though it saves a lot of frustration to get a tool to help install the front take down pin detent. Yet somehow I haven’t seen a single one in the wild anywhere. The MSR 10 Long Range More AR fans are looking for rifles that can be used for extended-range precision shooting without being overly heavy. Using a standard profile barrel is a smart move. I got my MSR from a pawn shop for $499. I’ve got a lead sled and a stinger, and neither shows worse for wear except for some paint chipping. Athlon Outdoors contributor Mike Detty is back to give us his take on the Savage MSR 15 Recon AR rifle. I am by no means mechanically inclined but I always like learning how things work. Groups were shot with the scope on 14X magnification. Unlike many others, this stock has zero wobble, and maintained a tight fit throughout the review. Is the trigger single or two stage? On the AR-15 platform, the new MSR 15 Recon and MSR 15 Patrol are chambered in 223 Wylde, which enhances out-of-the-box accuracy and allows safe, reliable … ”, All other reviews: “I have used this gun extensively, with over 100 rounds down the pipe.”. Of course, that depends on the quality of the barrel and how hard you’re pushing the rounds through it. As is, it’s okay. Of course, I could just move the rings up a notch or two on the Picatinny rail and problem solved. The MSR’s muzzle brake is big and very effective at turning recoil into lots of blast and noise. ©COPYRIGHT 2020, THETRUTHABOUTGUNS.COM ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. With the MSR-15 Valkyrie, Savage turned their Recon package into a competition-ready, hunt-ready shooter with a fascinating cartridge, the .224 Valkyrie. According to Savage, this is a “tunable” muzzle brake. It’s an AR. This has been tested and proven as a sub MOA rifle with the 5R rifling they incorporate. So a couple points that make me question his experience with accuracy. Left to right: 55gr 5.56 NATO, 90gr 6.8 SPC, 90gr .224 Valkyrie (image courtesy JWT for thetruthaboutguns.com). Although it is exposed at the front end of the handguard, it’s a little too tight to hand adjust. Offered in .224 Valkyrie, .22 Nosler, and 6.8 SPC, Savage's new MSR 15 Recon LRP rifles are designed to stretch the platform's performance envelope. Pressing the trigger slowly and smoothly revealed more stuttering than the first act of The King’s Speech. Your email address will not be published. Long before many of us ever heard the term “C-clamp” referring to a grip style, service members were holding their M4s like this, since that was the easy way to manipulate our IR laser/illuminator mounted to the top rail of our rifles. There was nothing resembling a clean break. I had no issues dialing it to just keep the bolt locked back on an empty magazine with the 60 grain rounds, or doing the same with the 90 grain bullets. I would much prefer a “big boy” latch, as this small handle gets in the way of scope rings. Oxidation happens. The Savage MSR 15 Long Range proved to be a smooth shooter. The only problem is you need a rational argument for how most other people could afford it or why they should save up for it. While not a brand-new gun, I was able to get my hands on one of Savage’s newer rifles, the MSR-10 Hunter chambered in .308 Win. Update: my friend called me today, he bought the Savage MSR 15 Recon last Thursday morning and picked it up Friday morning. One lady even said to me “Ugh, that’s the kind of work you pay poor people to do” before she walked off (which was really rather pathetic since she wasn’t exactly living high off the hog herself). Overstuffed Magpul 5.56 NATO mags bulged, just like they do with regular 6.8SPC cases, and were difficult to insert, but dropped freely once they were empty. But if you’re shooting projectiles from 60 to 90 grains, shooting suppressed, or if keeping the rifle as still as possible during the recoil cycle is important, an adjustable gas block is a big help. Just received my first AR-15, the Savage MSR 15 Recon and have 3 questions that I hope somebody can help with. It’s still very much the grip I prefer when shooting on the move, as it allows for easy access to accessories, as well as a fast start and stop of the gun. The standard charging handle is the only thing that might have done it, but then it would be a 4.9 star review, and that’s just petty. When the AR glut started I bought a stag arms with an MSRP of 1200 for 800. Just sayin’. May you live on indefinitely! I think you’re right. Like the rest of the guns in this section, we tested the Savage MSR 15 RECON 2.0 at 50 yards with a non-magnifying red-dot optic (Leupold Freedom RDS). On the outside the Recon shows promise. On this gun, Savage opted for a mid-length gas system. I noticed that the handguard's rail is not perfectly aligned with the receiver's rail. The birdcage flash hider makes sense — it’s a good “default” muzzle device and easily forgotten once you get your direct thread BLACKHAWK! Very good review Mr. Taylor. It gives the shooter plenty of room for a good cheek-stock weld, and the adjustable length of pull is stepped enough to give plenty of options. In fact, the Valkyrie “loses a lot between 18 and 20 inches of barrel length,” Gilliland added. It must be the 1.0 version since it doesn’t have the Blackhawk furniture. Even so, I hope that this reviews about it Savage Msr Recon Stripped Lower Receiver Review And Smith Wesson Ar 15 Complete Lower Receiver will always be useful. With the velocity loss, what bullet weight range is best for defense purpose? Unlike many companies, Savage chose to mix their furniture up a bit, with a Magpul stock and a Hogue grip. Several competitors used this cartridge with solid results. Fix the trigger and the rifle would be one of the more accurate offerings in this price range. There are some minor style embellishments in the lower receiver. Heck, if I were to walk out the door with any one gun, it’d be my very well-proven 1950’s era Savage in .30-06. Of course the wrench isn’t that expensive anyway. Those crappy triggers probably cost them $15. Wow, I haven’t been tempted to buy an off the shelf AR in a long time. That doesn’t seem right. Just might dump my .22-250 bolt gun for this. Those of you familiar with the long-time King of the Varmints, the .22-250 Remington, should recognize that 60 grain load.
